Cary, NC – January 27, 2016 – Industry Standard Research (ISR) today announced a new addition to its Department Models and Structures suite of reports. The new report aims to provide readers with a comprehensive assessment of the organizational environment and landscape within clinical development outsourcing departments at mid-size and large biopharmaceutical companies. As biopharma companies continue to increase clinical development outsourcing levels, these departments hold an increasingly pivotal role within their companies and within the CRO community as well.

This report was compiled by conducting 45-minute in-depth telephone interviews with 15 senior-level decision-makers from 15 different large and mid-size biopharma companies in the US, Europe, and China. Interviewees discussed their department’s structure, reporting lines, headcount, budget levels, and what they see changing (for the good and bad) in the future.

“With the growing penetration of functional service provider (FSP) and long-term preferred provider models for outsourced clinical development, we are not sure there is a more powerful or influential group of people in the clinical development world than the outsourcing department,” explained Andrew Schafer, President at Industry Standard Research. Schafer continued, “Having worked closely with clinical development outsourcing departments in a former life, it was nice to have the opportunity to candidly talk to department heads about what they like and don’t like about how their department is structured, staffed, and measured.”

In the report, ISR points out “Best Practices” that were identified during the interviews. The report is structured using a case study approach such that the readers retain the granularity uncovered in the interviews. “It was quite interesting to hear about how the procurement department can impact the clinical development outsourcing department and to learn what excites and worries the research participants about the next few years,” added Schafer.
